The horrific suicide bombing at a concert in Manchester was the latest reminder of the threat of terrorism, both at home and abroad. President Trump has talked tough about combatting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), which took credit for the attack, but there are many uncertainties about the direction of his administration's foreign and defense policies. How do we gauge the current threat posed by ISIL and other terrorist groups? What role do various federal agencies have to play in preventing attacks from occurring within our borders and throughout the world? Will the recent scandal involving the firing of FBI director James Comey handicap the Trump administration's agenda?

On Wednesday, June 14th, the Manhattan Institute (MI) and Young Leaders' Circle (YLC) are proud to welcome Manhattan Institute adjunct fellow, Judy Miller in conversation with David Cohen, former Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, to discuss these and other questions about national security.

Judith Miller is an adjunct fellow at the Manhattan Institute, a City Journal contributing editor and an investigative reporter formerly with the New York Times. She was part of a team that won a Pulitzer for articles before 9/11 on Osama bin Laden. Miller is coauthor of the #1 New York Times bestseller Germs: Biological Weapons and America's Secret War and Saddam Hussein and the Crisis in the Gulf and the author of God Has Ninety-Nine Names: Reporting from a Militant Middle East and One, by One, by One: Facing the Holocaust. Miller holds a B.A. from Barnard College and a master's from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

David Cohen served for 12 years as the NYPD Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence, a position established in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. He revolutionized the way the NYPD collected, analyzed and used intelligence, and leveraged traditional intelligence methods and relationships abroad to successfully protect New York City from another terrorist attack. During his 35 year CIA career, Cohen served as Deputy Director of Operations overseeing CIA's global network of personnel as well as its relationships with foreign government security and intelligence services. Prior to that, he was the CIA's Associate Director of Intelligence, and oversaw all CIA economic, political and military analysis and reporting provided to the President and the nation's national security leadership.
