Give states the power to innovate outside of President Donald Trump's polarized Washington.
In the wake of its stunning election defeat, much of the left has responded with two seemingly contradictory assertions: That Washington is run by clueless, even sociopathic, villains, and that Washington should remain as powerful as possible.
Instead, the nation's deep polarization makes a strong case for devolution – getting money and power out of Washington, and instead freeing up state and local governments to tailor programs to the unique needs of their constituents.Take K-12 education policy. Liberal activists fought Betsy DeVos' nomination for education secretary with a ferocity unseen since the 2003 Iraq war debate. It logically follows that they would seek to limit her power over America's schools. Instead, DeVos' conformation was followed by an aggressive liberal social media campaign to oppose an obscure bill (H.R. 610 by Rep. Steve King) that would defang the Department of Education by repealing Washington mandates and giving more flexibility to states, local communities and parents to determine how federal education dollars are spent.
In other words, many of Betsy DeVos' harshest critics are also pushing to ensure that education continues to be run out of Washington by…Betsy DeVos.
