Steven A. Cohen

Steven Cohen, Ph.D., is the executive director of Columbia University’s Earth Institute and a Professor in the Practice of Public Affairs at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. He also directs the M.P.A. program in Environmental Science and Policy at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs, the M.S. program in Sustainability Management at Columbia’s School of Professional Studies, and the Research Program on Sustainability Policy and Management. Cohen is a former policy analyst and consultant to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and has been at Columbia since the early 1980s. He serves on numerous boards and committees, including the board of directors of Homes for the Homeless, board of directors of the Willdan Group, Inc., the advisory board of the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment, and the judging committee for the Yidan Prize Foundation. Cohen is the author or coauthor of numerous books, including Sustainability Policy: Hastening the Transition to a Cleaner Economy (2015, with William Eimicke and Alison Miller), Understanding Environmental Policy (2006, 2014), Sustainability Management (2011), and The Effective Public Manager (1988, in its fifth edition). He has written many articles on public management, sustainability management, and environmental policy. Cohen also is a weekly contributor to the Huffington Post.
