The Manhattan Institute (MI) is a community of scholars, journalists, activists, and civic leaders who are united by a shared commitment to advancing economic opportunity, individual liberty, and the rule of law in America and its great cities. MI is independent, creative, and bold, and we are hiring a like-minded, early-career Communications Designer to help design the work of the Institute and its Fellows and programs, online and in print.

The Communications Designer (Junior Designer) will work across departments, including the research, marketing, and communications teams, to meet the Institute’s publishing goals and standards and to ensure that all content is consistent with the Manhattan Institute’s overall brand. The ideal candidate will be a detail-oriented and deadline-driven person with a passion for designing reports and for converting data and research into comprehensible narratives.

Responsibilities 

  • Layout and design of research publications and various promotional materials for fundraising, and external affairs (basic image preparation and manipulation, creating charts, tables, and other reader-friendly media)  
  • Assisting with the editing of outreach materials, fundraising materials, and other publications as needed  
  • Management of select website content (preparing content to be published online, by moving copy and other assets into our content management systems) 
  • Assisting the marketing team as needed in the design of social media and website assets as well as email marketing 
  • Communicating with stakeholders across various departments to ensure that published projects occur on-schedule and meet expectations 
  • Work with the design team to maintain and develop our brand standards for graphics, print products and all touch points

Required Qualifications 

  • 1 – 4 years of experience in web or print graphic design with portfolio that demonstrates a clear grasp of impact, typographic voice, layout and color
  • Experience with or mastery of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop. Familiarity with other design software preferred for layout including selecting, editing and preparing imagery for press
  • Familiarity with publishing and editorial calendars with some editing experience preferred
  • Strength in information and data visualizations graphics
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with video or motion graphic software (i.e. Adobe After Effects and Premiere), photography, and social media platforms a plus
  • Optional: Experience with website content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress, Drupal, or Squarespace 
  • Optional: An understanding of Google Analytics, search engines, basic SEO
  • Ability to collaborate with other staff and take directions from various people 
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and communicate with colleagues to manage competing priorities 
  • Familiarity with MI policy priorities and the work of MI scholars; a keen interest in supporting and extending this work
  • Experience working with remote teams 

Benefits

This position is anticipated to be based in New York City, NY; however, we are open to remote candidates. For New York-based employees, we anticipate that the role will be hybrid, with at least two or three days every week in our midtown Manhattan office.  Financial assistance with relocation is available.
