SPEAKER:

IMPROVING TEACHER QUALITY:
KEY TO URBAN SCHOOL REFORM

One of the goals set by the No Child Left Behind Act was that of placing a "highly qualified" teacher in every American classroom by 2014. That ambitious goal reflects an overwhelming consensus among education officials and experts that improving the quality of teachers in our urban public schools is the key to raising academic performance for all students as well as closing the racial achievement gap. By one estimate, achievement gaps can be substantially narrowed by providing disadvantaged students with high quality classroom teachers for five consecutive years.

With the teacher quality issue now at the center of the education reform debate Manhattan Institute is sponsoring a conference that will explore the best means of improving teacher training and providing effective incentives for high level performance by teachers in the classroom.

We expect a spirited debate and discussion of these vital and timely education issues.
